Five hours.
It might as well have been five thousand years that I was forced to torture a demon Iâd grown to care about.
I never would have expected to struggle to find enjoyment in my favorite sort of torment, but none of this felt right.
Kaitoâs mortal form all but hung from him in tatters. His chest, now jutting with broken ribs, heaved as he gulped in air.
Black blood splattered the walls. The floors.
Everywhere.
Even my wings, tarnishing them with dark spots that made me feel like I was the one being Corrupted.
âGive in,â I growled for the thousandth time. âEnd this, Kaito.â
Kaito could barely move. He gripped the torture chair Iâd shoved him into and ignored the nails that sank into his hand.
He lifted his chin and glared at me. One eye had swollen shut, but the other was wide open. The silver scar that ran up his face gleamed with angry power.
He was so close to letting his Kami take over.
He was also very close to dying.
I wasnât sure which one he preferred more. Pushing him further was a risk that this wasnât going to go my way.
And for the first time⦠I feared Iâd made a mistake.
âKaito,â I growled as I decided to give into my last resort. âDonât make me do this.â
Heat blazed through my body as I summoned my angelic weapon.
The Whip of Penance.
Iâd been trying to get him to talk to me in my head again so that we could talk freely, but heâd closed himself off from me the moment the torture had begun.
We were going to have to do this the hard way.
âDo your worst, Az,â he growled, using the shortened version of my name.
For some reason, that made it even harder to lift my whip.
But I did.
And then I let it fall, sending a golden streak down his broken body.
He screamed. The sound of true pain twisted my heart.
Because my whip didnât just elicit agony of the flesh. It drew out sinâand a demon like Kaito had plenty of that to extract.
This tactic usually worked on Fallen Angels and helped them grow closer to their original selves. A Fallen Angel without sin was simply an angel at the end of it all.
A demon without sin, though, was nothing at all.
This could kill him.
Or⦠it could force him to fight back.
âGive me what I want!â I shouted.
I didnât want to know his secret of how he resisted Calamity. I already had an idea.
He hadnât rejected Calamity.
Calamity had rejected him⦠because he couldnât be controlled if his demon was set free.
In some ways, I suspected he was even more powerful than Lucifer or Cole. I didnât yet know why, but that was the only explanation how heâd resisted Calamity when the rest of the mate-circle had not.
My brother and myself had insanity on our side, leaving a disjointed mind that Calamity couldnât get a handle on.
What I wanted from Kaito was to show what made him special.
To embrace who he truly was and get his head out of his fucking ass.
